Charities of Fraternal Order of Eagles
The Fraternal Order of Eagles has established several charitable causes that the FOE supports through fund raising efforts. Below are the current charities, the history behind the fund, and the cause it is used for. This is just one of the many ways that Fraternal Order of Eagles are "People helping People".
Jimmy Durante Children's Fund
Jimmy Durante
The Eagles have done a lot for many. The Aerie and Auxiliary Members, have every reason to be proud of our many accomplishments.. I think that through our Jimmy Durante Children's Fund and child abuse project has come one of the greatest of all our achievements. The extending of our helping hand to mentally and physically impaired children and also, to mentally and physically abused youngsters. These are children who need our help so badly!
As you know, the fund was named in honor of JIMMY DURANTE. One of the worlds most beloved human beings and an active life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Jimmy entertained without charge at fourteen consecutive Grand Aerie Conventions and at many other Eagle gatherings until a stroke felled him several years ago. Eagles who had great affection for this gentlest and kindest of men felt it appropriate in 1966 to name their children helping effort for a man who loved all people, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.
At Jimmy's first appearance at a Grand Aerie Convention in 1961, judge Bob Hansen inquired about his fee for performing. Jimmy replied: "don't even mention money judge or I'll have to mention a figure that'll make ya sorry ya brought it up." "What can we do then?" asked Hansen. "HELP DA KIDS" answered Jimmy.... and help them we have.
The Eagles have already raised over $17 million, but best of all... EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR of that $17 million is at work today making life just a little more worth living for some pretty special little kids who deserve all the love and help we can give them. To help them fit just a little bit better into a world that hasn't seemed too kind to them.
Not one dime of the contributions to the Jimmy Durante Children's Fund or the abused children's project goes for expenses of any kind. One hundred percent of all money is sent to the Children's Fund or Abused Children's Project is used for grants to Child-helping establishments with nothing taken out for overhead expenses, campaign costs, salaries, etc.
The unique thing about the Jimmy Durante Children's Fund grants is that nearly dollar-for-dollar all money raised in a state is returned to that state in the form of $1,000.00 grants to children-helping organizations of the state's choosing. The selection of the recipients is up to the State Aerie President, with the approval of the State Executive Board. It is stressed, when the grants are made available to the states, that the Auxiliary be consulted when selections are made. The Auxiliaries have always been the mainstay of the Jimmy Durante Children's Fund and should have a say and a part in the selection and presentation.
While grants from the Children's Fund can be used in any way for children-helping establishments (those caring for abused, mentally and physically impaired children or hospitals researching the diseases of children), the object of these $1,000.00 grants is to provide for the children something special. Something over and above what is ordinarily provided for them. There have been thousands of different ways that these grants have been used: Playground equipment; buses to transport children; physical therapy aids; complex electronic gadgets that help the physically disabled children to learn basic communication and educational skills; captains chairs and tables so that spastic teenagers can eat with dignity and not have to be tied onto straight-backed chairs; piped-in music used to soothe gravely ill crib-babies; a week at a summer camp for kids who would never know this fun if it weren't for you. We will continue through contributions earmarked "Prevent Child Abuse" to award grants to safe havens/shelters and other establishments caring for and/or treating and counseling physically and mentally abused children. The list goes on and on.
The important thing is that because of your generosity, your dedication and your hard work, you are making life at least a little more worth living for some youngsters too many people have forgotten.
That you would be willing to do this for children you have never seen and who will never be able to thank you personally is mighty fine proof of how wonderful you people are.
Death took Jimmy Durante nearly 30 years ago and the entertainment world lost one of its most beloved stars. The Eagles lost a friend of long standing. The man who could command astronomical fees came to eagle conventions to entertain his friends the eagles for 13 years, and at no cost. He always worked as hard as though a lot of money was riding on his performance. All he asked in the way of pay was that we "HELP DA KIDS".
Jimmy Durante will live forever in the world of show business. He will live too forever in the annals of the Fraternal Order of Eagles through the fund named for him and which we will continue to support in honor of his memory.
Golden Eagles Fund

In the early 70's the Eagles took to heart the statistics on the fast-growing ranks of the elderly. The needs of the elderly would surely grow, they reasoned. Thus was born the Eagles National Golden Eagle Fund. It had the blessing of the Memorial Foundation and became the Order's only senior oriented fund raising program, the youngest of the national Eagle funds. Since that time, donations to Golden Eagle have provided $1,000 grants to bona fide charitable organizations for community-oriented programs served primarily the aged. Final recommendations in a state are made by the state Aerie executive board. At last count, over 2,097 grants have been made. (Does not include larger grants made at Grand Aerie Conventions). The Fund is heading toward its fourth million dollars in donations received. The strong support of Eagle Auxiliaries has been rewarded by the Library grant program. It provides a $500 grant to the library of choice for the purchase of large print books and/or services for the elderly, to those Auxiliaries donating a hundred dollars. To date, 5,480 library grants have been made.
In 1985, Alzheimer's (pronounced altz'hi-merz) was practically unknown to the public. the Golden Eagle Fund became aware of it through research being done by the Harvard Medical School. With the approval of the Memorial Foundation, Alzheimer's became a part of the Golden Eagle Fund. First described by Alois Alzheimer in 1906 (German physicist 1864-1915) AD, as it's known, is a neurological illness. It causes progressive declines in the ability to think, to learn, to perform many routine activities. It affects an estimates 2.5 million adults. Its cause is not known and is currently receiving intensive scientific investigation. It's called the "disease of the century." Eagles have responded generously, citing family, relatives, friends as victims of this cruel disease. The Memorial Foundation has in the past couple of years given the Golden Eagle Fund $1000,000 each year for 20 $5,000 Alzheimer research grants.
Scientists are using more sophisticated research techniques and exploring a wider range of areas to discover the cause, treatment and cure of Alzheimer's disease. Genetic predisposition, slow virus, environmental toxins and immunologic changes are all areas currently under intensive study.
Mindful that Alzheimer's Disease is for the victim's family an emotional nightmare of watching the inevitable erosion of a loved one's mind, personality and physical ability, the Golden Eagle Fund makes available, free, a Caregivers Award for Aeries/Auxiliaries to present to caregivers as a token of support.
Judge Robert Hansen Diabetes Fund
In 1978, the scope of the Heart Fund was expanded when science learned how often Diabetes is associated with heart problems. Under the umbrella of the Eagles Max Baer Heart Fund, a new fund was organized, the Eagles Judge Robert W. Hansen Diabetes Fund.
Judge Hansen twice served as Grand Worthy President, and as editor of the Eagles Publications. He was the former Director of the Eagles Max Baer Heart Fund and Chairman of the Program and Activities Department.
He was also appointed Judge in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1954 and elected as justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1966. He loved the law, but his devotion to the F.O.E. was always uppermost in his mind.
Art Erhmann Cancer Fund
Art Ehrmann was taken by death on Labor Day 1975, terminating a gallant battle against cancer. He was the first director of "The Eagles Cancer Fund" when the fund was established by the Grand Aerie in November 1959.
Art served as Editor of "Eagle Publications" for twenty-five years and every Eagle was his friend. In his memory, the Eagles named their cancer fund "The Eagle Art Ehrmann Cancer Fund".
The Eagles Art Ehrmann Cancer Fund is a fund being raised by members of the F.O.E. to be used for cancer research in an effort to combat one of mankind's worst killers. The purpose is to raise funds and make grants to universities, hospitals, and other institutions involved in cancer research, and related projects including hospice care.
Doc Dunlap Kidney Fund
Doc Dunlap
The Eagles D.D. Dunlap Kidney Fund is very close to my heart. In fact, I wrote the first proposal that started this people-helping fund in 1974, after my young son was involved in an accident that literally broke one of his kidneys in half.
Today, kidney disease affects millions of persons. Many of these people depend on dialysis to help them stay alive while awaiting a kidney transplant.
Brothers and sisters, let's all pitch in and do our part in raising the needed funds to stop kidney disease.
Max Baer Heart Fund
The primary purpose of the Eagles Heart fund is to aid in heart research and education. Since the fund was started, millions of dollars have been donated to universities, medical centers and hospitals across the US and Canada.
The fund is named after the late heavyweight boxing champion Max Baer. Bear was a long time Eagle and was loved by everyone who met him. In 1959 when Baer died of a heart attack, the Eagles decided to create a fund as a tribute to his memory and as a means of combating the disease that took his life.
Eagles Memorial Fund
The EAGLES MEMORIAL FUND was started in 1947. Since its inception about $3 million in education and health benefits have been distributed to the children of Eagle heroes.
Eagle heroes are members of the FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES who lost their lives in the line of duty as an member of the Armed Forces of their country (U.S. and Canada), law enforcement officers, firefighters, prison guards and Emergency Medical Technicians.
Last year the education grant allowances were raised to $6,000 a year with a maximum of $30,000 available for all years.
